Contribution to My Learning and the Learning Community
Self-Assessment Score: 95
A key element that supported my learning in this course was the emphasis on creating significant learning experiences. Fink (2013) explains that meaningful learning occurs when students move beyond memorization and engage in reflection, application, and integration of ideas. I approached this course with that mindset by consistently connecting assignments to authentic challenges in my classroom and school. My innovation work around GoGuardian implementation and digital engagement allowed me to apply course concepts directly to a real instructional environment. This alignment helped deepen my understanding of how instructional design, leadership, and reflective practice can work together to improve learning outcomes.
Another important aspect of my growth came through the COVA learning approach—choice, ownership, voice, and authentic learning opportunities (Harapnuik et al., 2018). Throughout the course, I exercised choice in shaping my assignments around my innovation plan and classroom experiences. This ownership increased my engagement with the learning process and helped ensure that the work I produced had real-world relevance beyond the course itself. By connecting course concepts to my innovation project and professional practice, I was able to communicate my ideas with authenticity and purpose while also contributing meaningful perspectives during class discussions.
Collaboration with classmates also played an important role in my learning. Through discussion forums and collaborative conversations, I engaged with colleagues who were implementing innovation projects in a variety of educational settings. These exchanges provided valuable insight and helped broaden my understanding of how leadership and instructional change occur across different contexts. I contributed to these discussions by sharing practical classroom perspectives, responding to classmates’ ideas, and offering feedback that supported their thinking. These conversations reinforced the importance of a collaborative learning community in which educators share experiences, challenge ideas, and refine their approaches together.
In addition to participating in discussions, I worked intentionally to complete all assigned readings, videos, and supporting resources. I also used those materials to strengthen my thinking and support my contributions to discussions and assignments. Revising my work throughout the course allowed me to refine my ideas and better align my innovation plan with the principles of meaningful learning and authentic engagement. This iterative process of reflection and revision mirrors the type of continuous improvement that educators must practice in their professional work.
While I believe my contributions to the course were strong, there are still areas where I can improve. In future courses, I would like to engage even earlier in discussion forums and provide additional follow-up responses to classmates. Doing so would allow for deeper dialogue and extended collaboration within the learning community. Increasing these types of interactions would further strengthen the collective learning experience.
Overall, this course reinforced the importance of authentic learning, reflection, and collaboration in professional growth. By approaching assignments through the lens of my innovation project and classroom practice, I was able to create meaningful connections between theory and practice. My engagement with the course materials, participation in discussions, and commitment to refining my work contributed to both my own development and to the broader learning community. For these reasons, I believe a self-assessment score of 95 accurately reflects my level of engagement, effort, and contribution throughout the course.
